KLM advertising history and some other designs

I got inspirations for revolutionary advertising process.

I got inspirations for evolutionary identity's process.

Advertising (revolution)

Based on a big idea, I explored images and ideas for advertising (revolution)
The main concept behind the design is coexistence of living creatures.
I adapted to use butterflies for airline shape and nautilus, which I use for the idea level for identity.

Here is some inspirations stuff for advertising.






Advertising (Evolution)

Based on a big idea, I did a brain storming for creating advertising (evolutional approach)

What kind of living creatures I can use for creating attractive advertising?
I kept looking for animals and flowers all the time, but what about leaves?
It is also alive with people on the same planet.

I scanned some leaves to see how I can play with them.
As Damian recommended, I did some research about Georges Braque, who is a French artist drawing a lot of birds.
He is an amazing artist. There are lots of beautiful bards. The curving shape and wings are
impressive.
I started sketching birds a lot and a lot. I need to draw and explore more and more!!!

Who is Georges Braque?
Georges Braque was born in 1882. He grew up near Paris, and in 1902 he settled there to study painting. He really liked pictures by the fauves who painted with bright colors and unstructured forms. He painted in those styles until 1908. In 1908 Braque began to paint in the cubist style. Between 1908 and 1913 he began to study light and perspective. He used his studies to use shading of a cube to make it look both flat and three-dimensional at the same time.
In 1909, Braque began to work with Pablo Picasso . They both began to use neutral colors and complex geometric patterns. This style of art is now called analytic cubism.

Brand identity (revolution)

The big idea is "coexistence"
Unlike brand identity (revolution), I completely changed the image of brand identity.
I still remain sky blue colour, but it is part of importance for shifting the colours.
Sky blue to green to yellow.

The colour meaning is:
to change the original service: Sky blue
to caring company for people and environment: Green
to promise bright peaceful future: Yellow

As a visual, there is no crown and power of Royal Ducth; however, the shape of identity, circle has the meaning.
The circle represents "Orb".
Orb is a ball that a king hold as a power. The meaning is also involved a globe.
It is power and a living place.

I attached some pictures, which I used for getting inspirations for identity.

Brand identity (evolution)

A big idea: Coexistence
Brand identity for evolution is to develop the original identity, but keep the important part of current design of KLM.
I decided to keep the crown image and the sky blue colour.
The reasons are:

1. KLM is owned by the government and a crown is representative of Holland.
2. The colour represent sky and there is no transportations using the same colours in Holland.
In addition, other airline companies do not use the same colour. It is KLM distinguishable colour.

I developed the current identity by creating Art Nouveau style leaf image and it is also links to Algae, which
KLM airline is going to use as fuel.

The font that I created is new, but reminded the original KLM font.
The idea is keep the important factor from original images, but develop the identity for the future promise.






A big idea for this project

A background for the big idea:

KLM is going to:
Green-using "algae-based fuel"
More friendly
Surviving without cutting flight cost
Sociable
Better service

The new business is that KLM is going to use algae-based fuel if succeeded and clear safety issue and supply.

KLM needs the better communication and inform everyone that they are caring people and green.
How can KLM link each other to inform their service and green activities?

"Coexistence"
Between KLM and humans
Between KLM and living creatures
Between land creatures and sea creatures
Between flying creatures and land creatures
Between flying creatures and sea creatures
All of them links together for food chain and living on the planet.

14th of August 2008
Tutorial with Damian
Comment:
For identity, add pantone numbers for the colour samples. I also need to look at the book called "Brnding" about font.
Sketch birds for advertising. There are many ways I can do.
About literature review, I talked about the structure: Introduction, Objective of literature review, Research methods, case study of KLM, Strategy and graphic design for the new KLM, Critical appraisal, conclusion and references.
It sounds OK for him. I showed my paper to my English tutor and there is not so much English grammer corrections. I am very glad to know about that I am on time so far.

I am going to finish literature review this weekend and advertising.
I also think about strategy (KLM comfortable image) and interior design of airline.



12th August 2008

Comment: For brand identities for evolution and revolution, I need to make a sample of font, colour chart, black and white and colour versions of brand identities.
I need to make clear about each design concept.
For revoution, he gave me one reference, which is Orb.
According to The Oxford English dictionary, orb means "a circle, or anything of circular form".
"A kind of fish, of a round form" "a sphere or globe; anything of spherical or globular shape"
It is links to fish and round. Also, it is a ball for a king. The identity of revolution is very strong for the new brand identity.

For advertising (evolution), I need to work more as the leaf itself is not linked to airline or KLM. I have to be careful of using leaves as the shape looks like Thai design.
Damian recommended to look at birds, which created by Georges Braque, who is a French artist.
There are so many beautiful birds in his work.

The next action:
By 14th of August, I will finish brand identity chart and look for Georges Braque's work.
I am also going to start writing literature review.


7th of August

Comment:
I showed leaves, which I scanned and transfered to lines.
I am thinking of using leaves for advertising (Evolution). He said be careful of using leaves as it looks like Thai design.
For identities, look at font in a book, "Branding" .
I showed brand identity (revolution). I still keep ammonite shape and need to develop more.
He helped me to develop the identity. It is more bright future promising images.
It links to sunshine, green, and shift from original KLM image, sky blue.
It is also sociable and contemporary images.
I showed advertising (revolution) and it sounds almost OK, but I need to take some butterflies out as it is very crowd images.

The next actions:
I will reflect all comment to designs by the next tutorial.
The problem is how I can show the airline shapes with butterfly on advertising as I will change the numbers of butterflies.

Comment:
I showed brand identity (evolution). The identity looks nice, but I need to look at space between KLM.
I can use rotation (180 degree) to see how it looks like. I can slightly change the identity to see which one is the best.

I will finish this by the next tutorial.

I talked about a big idea of brand image. The big idea is "coexistence" of
"humans and other living creature" and "nature and KLM"
Background: KLM is trying to use algae-based fuel instead of gasoline however, they haven't inform about it to
the public though print media. (only public relation)
The big idea is very important to show what is different from original KLM obviously and attractive.
